Tempe is an inner suburb, located between the core city of Phoenix and the rest of the East Valley, which is a multi-city region within the Phoenix Metropolitan Area of Arizona. Downtown Tempe is in the northwest corner — adjacent to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Just southeast of downtown, Tempe is the home of the main campus of Arizona State University, which includes the Mountain America Stadium outdoor college football stadium (capacity 53,599) and Desert Financial Arena (capacity 14,198) and has a fairly dense, urbanized development pattern in the northern part of the city especially in relation to the Valley Metro Line. Development in the southern neighborhoods of Tempe is less dense, consisting of single-family homes, strip malls and lower-density office parks.
Tempe’s length is about 10 miles north to south, and width about 5.5 miles west to east.
