While assisting in a search Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at one of the jails in Maricopa County, MCSO K9 Max was alerted to the presence of fentanyl on an inmate. Shortly after K9 Max’s involvement in the case, Max began showing signs of exposure to fentanyl and suffered significant medical distress. His handler, Detention Officer Rice and other detention staff acted quickly, and rushed MCSO K9 Max to a nearby animal hospital, where he was treated with Narcan and closely monitored.

“Max’s strength, and his handler’s quick response are nothing short of heroic.”

The handler keeps Narcan on hand. Detention Officer Rice possesses two Narcan sets for himself and two sets for K9 Max. According to Officer Rice, K9 Max was in the early stages, and in his judgement, it was safe to transport K9 Max to the Hayden Road Animal Hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona without deploying Narcan at the scene of the exposure.

Max made a full recovery and is eager to get back to work, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
